Amager Bryghus / Fonta Flora The Lady of Cofitachequi

Amager Bryghus / Fonta Flora The Lady of Cofitachequi in a Spiegelau IPA glassThe Lady of Cofitachequi is an IPA brewed at Amager Bryghus in collaboration with the North Carolina brewery Fonta Flora. I can’t say that I know the brewery very well. They visited Amager when they were in Copenhagen for Copenhagen Beer Celebration. I had a couple of their beers at the festival, but I wasn’t too impressed.

The Lady of Cofitachequi is a very classic IPA. It uses Amarillo, Simcoe and Citra hops, giving the beer a very nice and inviting aroma. It’s classic stuff like citrus peel and ripe peach that dominates the aroma.

Amager Bryghus / Fonta Flora The Lady of CofitachequiThe flavour has a good malty backbone with fresh bread and grain. There is a huge hop character, full of citrus and peach. You almost sense a sweetness from such dominant fruity hops. The aftertaste, however, is definitely bitter. There is a prickly bitterness that you can physically feel in the throat as you drink it. I love it when a hoppy beer does that.

At 7% ABV The Lady of Cofitachequi is stronger than many IPAs in Denmark these days. Along with the classic aroma and the prickly bitterness, I think it’s really an old school IPA. In the best possible way, and without the sickening caramel sweetness that was also a part of old school IPAs.

The set of Amager’s 2016 American collaboration beers was sent to Beertalk by Amager Bryghus and Boxbeers.
